Excellent app but has gone backwards a little

The Economist for iPad used to be the gold standard for magazine/newspaper apps, but hasnt changed in the last couple of years and in one area has gone backwards: typography. The app used to have ligatures (e.g. the dot over the i in find would be merged with the curve of the f.) Small thing, but it was one of the design and execution details that I appreciated. Also, it would be great if you were able to search both within an issue and across issues.
